Chapter 3

Rand

Kyle was a ball of energy when we woke up on Christmas Eve. He was normally my sleepy boy who never wanted to wake up, but he was poking me awake before the sun had fully risen. I knew a big part of his excitement was due to his playdate with Jonas later that day, but that wasn’t all.

For most of the week, Kyle had been waking up earlier than normal. It had taken me a while to put the pieces together. I’d been slowly putting wrapped gifts under the tree all week after he’d gone to bed because I was running out of hiding spaces in the closets. After Kyle had seen the presents the morning after I’d stashed a handful of gifts under the tree, he’d been waking up excited to see what gifts had appeared overnight.

I probably should have realized he was going to be excited about the gifts, but he’d grown up in a wealthy home, and I’d never expected presents under the tree would be a big deal to him. Then I’d overheard Kyle telling Jonas about the gifts that were accumulating under the tree.

Hearing my little one tell Jonas about the almost clinical Christmases, with perfectly wrapped gifts that contained mostly clothes, he’d had while he was growing up had made my chest tight. The gifts under our tree were not beautiful works of wrapping paper art, but I was glad he knew a number of the packages were toys for him. Okay, almost all of them. I’d bought him books and blocks and even more stuffed animals. Stuffed animals were a pain in the ass to wrap, so they were crumpled balls of gift wrap and tape, but watching his excitement every morning as he perused the growing pile made it impossible to not want to buy him even more things.

It was a good thing that we had Jace and Jonas coming over for Christmas Eve or I would have likely found an excuse to buy something else for Kyle.

“Daddy,” Kyle whispered as I pretended to sleep. “Daddy, it’s Christmas Eve. Jonas is coming to play!”

I cracked an eye open and looked at the clock across the room. “Not for another four hours, little one. Close your eyes and go back to sleep.”

“Pancakes?”

It was going to be one of those mornings, I could already see it. Kyle wasn’t normally little in the mornings. He was usually surly and too tired to function, but he was awake today, and clearly little. I had two options, ignore him or enjoy him. I chose the latter. Having my little one awake and happy in the morning was too rare to ignore.

“Okay, pancakes, then we’ll get you ready.”

I was pretty sure the giggle Kyle let out was unintentional. I actually wasn’t sure if he even realized he’d made the sound. He rolled out of bed with Fred in his arms and hurried to the bathroom, his binkie dangling from the clip on his shirt. The curve of his butt was slightly more prominent thanks to the thick training pants he’d gone to bed in.
